Extraordinary Goal Setting

We offer an 8-week program on extraordinary goal setting.

This article is an overview of:

  • What extraordinary goal setting is
  • Why it is important
  • What our course covers
  • What are SMART goals
  • The benefits

Goal setting involves the development of an action plan designed to motivate and guide a person or group toward a goal. It can be guided by a goal setting criterion such as SMART goals. Goal setting is a major component of personal-development and management literature.

Why is extraordinary goal setting important?

Goals give us a direction, or a road map.

Most people have a vision for their lives inside them – whether they’re consciously aware of it or not.

The power of goal setting comes from knowing what we want, but more specifically, writing down exactly what we want so we can keep it in our focus.

Writing down goals and reviewing them daily is an extremely powerful way to manifest them.
When we write things down, we are saying to ourselves that they are of high importance. There is significance attached to what we wrote, as well as emotion.

Reviewing your top goals daily is imperative! You will begin to focus on what you want.
The best time to review our goals is in the morning, right after we wake up, and then right before we go to sleep at night.

However, action will be needed. You will need to create a plan for achieving your goals.

  1. Goals must be specific and dated
  2. Review and act towards achieving your goals daily
  3. Identify the obstacles in your way
  4. Create an action step to overcome the obstacles – and take action
  5. Oh yeah, and if you want to see your dreams to become a reality, never give up!

Visioning Background.

When people have a vision for their lives it makes everything easier, from goal setting, prioritising actions and day-to-day activities to making tough decisions. In addition, when people’s’ goals align with the vision they have for their life – and what’s most important to them – they’re more motivated.

It’s a rewarding process for us as life coaches to take our clients’ overarching vision and then chunk that vision down into smaller, more meaningful goals for them to move forward with.

We have visioning exercises to help our clients envision and set the scene for a bigger version of their lives, as well as providing essential input to the goal setting process.

Drawing out a life vision is deep and/or challenging work. We will aid you with visioning worksheets and exercises.

Our tools.

Our tools explore the vision our clients have for their lives, help set goals which fit into the bigger picture, explore and decide which goals are most meaningful (or exciting!) to move forward with, look at goal ecology, obstacles, success boosters and begin to take action.

What our 8 week extraordinary goal setting program consists of:

  1. A Vision For Your Life – Identifying a whole life vision that maps onto a 10 year vision and then onto a 3 month vision.
  2. Picking Goals to Move Forward With – Brainstorming your vision and goal ideas. Selecting meaningful goals that add real value to your life.
  3. Goal Ecology & Motivation – Explore WHY you want your goals, and why NOW to gain maximum commitment.
  4. Nailing Down and Making SMART goals – Making your goals more effective by setting SMART goals and identifying obstacles.
  5. Annual Goal-Setting – The process of setting 3 specific annual goals – from start through to an action to take tomorrow!

What are SMART goals?

All goals should be SMART – that is;

Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timed.

This means:

  • Specific: Don’t have goals about ‘improving my life’
  • Measurable: You should have a specific outcome
  • Attainable: You must be able to attain the goal. Don’t say, “I’m going to be Manchester United’s striker” (unless you are a football genius)
  • Relevant: The goal must relate to something important in your life
  • Timed: Against the goal, put a time by which it will be achieved. For example, you should not say: “I will get fit.” You should say “I will go to the local gym every Monday and Wednesday from 8.00 to 8.30am.”

The benefits of extraordinary goal setting and visioning.

Clarity – we are given the opportunity to reflect, focus and be absolutely specific about what we want
Awareness – we set our intentions and goals and then each day; week; month and year we can focus our full energy toward achieving them
Visualisation – the mind processes in pictures; not language, so a vision board helps your brain to achieve your goals by making them real, tangible and achievable
Feeling – tuning into our goals regularly; and seeing the pictures of the things we want to achieve; create the feeling of gratitude and joy in attaining our heart’s desires, and that is the language of abundance
